I Am Water 00:56
What am I but a walking sea? Endlessly dancing on broken glass, Nurtured under the wing of an ocean, Unable to venture beyond the coast. Mere matter, aware of itself; Knowing not whether it lasts, Only that it is and has been; Never truly fresh as a lake. Booming through the peaks of Appalachia, A mighty urge to flow west; Always undressed against the sun: I am water.

(Kurt Vonnegut) Now... Every lecture I've ever given has included My tribute to my Uncle Alex, my father's kid brother Who was a graduate of Harvard, and a wise man Just an insurance salesman in Indianapolis He was childless But what Uncle Alex found objectionable About so many human beings Is that they so seldom noticed it when they were happy And so we would be sitting under an apple tree, for instance On a July afternoon, drinking lemonade And you know, talking about this and that And practically buzzing like honey bees And Uncle Alex would stop everything and say If this isn't nice, I don't know what is! Now then... How many of you have had a teacher At any point in your whole educational career How many of you have had a teacher Who made you prouder to be alive Happier to be alive Than you had previously believed possible Would you show up your hands, please? Those of you who have Alright... Now then Would you please say the name of that teacher To someone sitting next to you (crowd chatters) If this isn't nice, I don't know what is!

about

"Mother Nurture" is an instrumental concept album that was created between September 2021 and March 2022. Broadly speaking, I aimed to observe tendencies of human behavior and the relationship between nature and nurture.

My songwriting process on this album was very improvisational. As the album progressed and I solidified the theme, I began to come up with titles and concepts beforehand, and my improvisation became more intentional. I was back and forth on including information about each song, but I ended up deciding to leave everything up for interpretation. Lyrics are available for any spoken parts, but otherwise I've only included the creation date and equipment used under each song's information.

This album also introduces my first use of the GarageBand auto drummer Logan. I wanted to go for more natural sounding drum tracks, and I quickly realized that using an auto drummer was not only easier, but it gave me more realistic and complex drum parts. I found that was still able to incorporate my own fills and guide the rhythm to how I wanted it (for the most part), so it worked out very well.

This album was remastered (and a little remixed) in August 2023. While working on the follow-up album, "Dreaming of a Tree," I spent more time learning about production and sound quality, and felt that the original release of "Mother Nurture" was lacking something. Now, you can hear what the album was originally meant to sound like.

Thanks for listening!
